Program Description

Event Details

Ancient Egyptians swore oaths on heads of garlic, early Olympic athletes consumed copious quantities of it, and WW I soldiers used it as an antibiotic.  Now, however, garlic is a star ingredient in just about every culture's cuisine.

So, why not grow your own great garlic?

In this program presented by horticulture and gardening expert Lesley Parness, you will learn about the various kinds of garlic, and which are best for your cooking style. She will  cover soil preparation, foolproof planting instructions, winter, spring and summer care, important garlic harvest tips, curing and storage.  A list of garlic vendors will be provided along with information on great cultivars to grow.

3 free heirloom garlic cloves for each person will be provided; additional garlic cloves for planting will be available for purchase at $1.00 each.

Lesley is a founding member and past President of Garden State Gardens, a consortium of NJ Public Gardens.

Currently, Lesley is a member of the Herb Society of America, and the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries. She writes a column for Gardener News Magazine, and is the consulting horticulturist at Jersey City’s Berry Lane Park.  Lesley is a frequent speaker at Garden Clubs, Historical Societies, and Libraries throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

The program is open to Livingston Library card holders 18 and up;  space is limited and registration is required.

It is made possible with the support of The Friends of the Livingston Public Library.
