Registration is now open to all.  You need not be a Livingston resident to register.

Discover the history of lettuce from early Egypt to today’s plates. Learn why Roman chef Epicus watered his lettuce with wine and why Peter, Flopsy and Mopsy were always asleep in the lettuce patch.

Then, plant seeds for 4 different lettuce cultivars for your spring garden.

The many shapes, such as oak leaf and deer's tongue, and colors from chartreuse to maroon make lettuce a great ornamental choice for spring plantings as well.

So, whether you plan to eat it, or simply admire it in your spring containers, this class will get you off to a great start.

Garden historian Lesley Parness will cover everything about growing lettuce including site selection, seed starting, lettuce types, great cultivars, pest management and critter control tips, historic recipes and harvesting.

Lesley is a founding member and past President of Garden State Gardens, a consortium of NJ Public Gardens. She is a member of the Herb Society of America, and the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries. She writes a column for Gardener News Magazine, and is the consulting horticulturist at Jersey City’s Berry Lane Park.  Lesley is a frequent speaker at Garden Clubs, Historical Societies, and Libraries throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

This workshop is open by registration only and space is limited.

This program is made possible with the support of The Friends of the Livingston Public Library.
