Have you ever wanted to start your own seeds but haven’t known where to start? Have you tried starting seeds indoors or out and failed for any number of reasons?
Seed starting indoors under lights, for cold and warm season vegetables can save you money and give you a jump on planting outside. It also gives you access to varieties that you may not find in nurseries as transplants.
This introductory talk by Master Gardener Lynne Proskow will help you get started with growing from seeds, feel more confident and help you improve your chances of success. She will cover potting mixes; containers; peat vs. coco coir; timing; and watering and light requirements so you can grow successful plants from seeds both indoors and out.
Microgreens are another option if you have no outdoor garden but want to eat healthy, and can be grown under lights year-round. Microgreens are vegetables and herbs grown from seeds and harvested at the seedling stage when they have only their seed leaves and before their true leaves develop. They are nutrient dense tiny versions of the larger plants in their first stages of growth.
They can be grown in small containers that can be kept on a kitchen windowsill, and what’s more, they grow quickly and can be harvested in just under 10 days for some varieties. They can be grown indoors in winter with very little investment of money and time, but can add great nutrition to your meals. It doesn’t get more local, fresh and organic than sowing and growing your own microgreens at home.
In the microgreens section, Lynne will examine some quick, fun and easy-to-sow-and-grow superfoods.
She will share many good resources, tips and tricks to make you a successful seed sower, and answer any related questions you may have.
Lynne is a lifelong organic gardener, who is passionate about healthy food, healing nature through eco-restoration, and teaching others the benefits of regenerative gardening practices.
This program is open to all and no registration is required.
