When actor James Stewart and director Frank Capra returned from serving in WWII, they chose It’s a Wonderful Life to re-start their Hollywood careers, collaborating with some of the best talents in the business. So they were shocked when this film proved to be a critical and commercial failure. Why did Olivia De Havilland refuse to be cast in this movie? And what eventually turned this almost forgotten film (about a man considering a Christmas suicide!) into a beloved December mainstay?
Entertainment historian John Kenrick takes us behind the scenes for the making of this inspiring film, examining its surprising evolution into an annual must-see. This talk includes clips of the most iconic moments, as well as information on behind-the-scenes battles during the filming. Join us as we celebrate the holiday season by recalling a movie that unforgettably affirms the value of life.
Entertainment historian John Kenrick has worked in the theater at every level from amateur to Broadway, eventually serving as personal assistant to six Tony Award winning producers, including the team behind the original production of Rent. He has taught musical theater history courses at New York University’s Steinhardt School, The New School University, and Philadelphia’s University of the Arts. He is the creator of the educational website Musicals101.com, and his books include “ Musical Theater: A History. ”
The program is open to all and no registration is needed.
It is made possible with the support of The Friends of the Livingston Public Library.
