In the spring of 1775, the American colonies took up arms in defense of their rights and liberties, igniting the Revolutionary War and the long struggle for independence from British rule. Following victory in the American Revolution, the newly formed United States recognized the need for a permanent, organized military force—establishing Armed Forces to protect the nation by land and sea.
